I block one full day each month to have a CEO Day. You might have heard other business owners talking about CEO days or ‘stepping into your CEO role’. At some point, you may have wondered, “What does that even mean?! What does that actually look like?” If you’re trying to figure out how to step into your CEO role, it may seem really grandiose, foreign, or even unnatural. But stepping into your CEO role can start with a really simple, even enjoyable, ritual. Enter the CEO Day. Today, I’m pulling back the curtain and sharing what I do on CEO Days as a multi-passionate entrepreneur. I’m also sharing how you can quickly and easily build this ritual into your business to increase your productivity too.
What’s a CEO Day?
A CEO Day is a day set aside for you to reflect on what’s happening in your business and make intentional, strategic decisions about how to move forward. As a creative business owner, it’s easy to get wrapped up in your work or even bogged down by day-to-day activities and NOT take the time to step back and reflect on what’s happening in your business (and life!).
To step into your CEO role, you need to make time to thoughtfully reflect and strategize. If you’re not intentional, you could go weeks, months, even years without stepping out of the day-to-day and reorienting yourself towards your goals. Establishing a regular CEO Day helps you consistently adjust and optimize your plans which makes it more likely that you’ll reach your goals.
What to do on a CEO Day
I do three things during every CEO Day. Every business is different, so your CEO Day checklist will look slightly different too! But no matter what type of business you have, there are three things every CEO will want to do on a CEO Day:
- Review the previous period or month. Look at your metrics, then reflect on what happened, what’s going well, and what needs to change.
- Preview the upcoming period or month. Review your goals, your calendar, and your top priority projects. Prepare yourself for what’s coming next and decide how you’re going to move forward.
- Create a plan for the upcoming period or month. For many small business owners, this will include choosing your top priority projects, adjusting your strategic plan, and mapping out your content calendar.
These steps may seem really simple, but stepping into your CEO role requires that you think strategically. You’re going to burn some mental calories! Really stop to think about your business, and what it’s going to take to reach your goals. When you take a step outside of your day-to-day you should gain a unique perspective and see challenges and solutions that were difficult or impossible to see while you were operating in it.
